THANK YOU! From A Nightmare on Main Street

haunted house

Our Premiere Haunted House " A Nightmare on Main Street' is now just a happy memory. I had no idea what was really involved when I started this project rolling. But it was worth it in the end. We converted our 22 x 160' building into one awesome haunted house. Before I go much further I have to say that it would not have happened without the hard work and hundreds of hours of volunteered time of Bernie and Roann Kofron and James Hubers. You people are amazing!

We had 17 rooms in our haunted house:
 Spider Den
 Zombie Cage
Graveyard
Acme Mask Factory
Portrait Gallery
Fur Maze
Electric Chair
Children of the Corn
Dracula's Resting Place
Hansel, Gretel and the Witch
The Butcher
The Dot Room
Zombie Nursery
Surgery
Birthday Party
House of 1000 Corpses
Captain Spaulding
and finally- The Girl from the Well

There were over 35 people working in the event each night from taking tickets, to acting as safety people, to the persons dressed to scare- and over 700 people walked through our house.

If it wasn't for the generous support of these people, and our sponsors, this haunted house might never had happened.

I need to thank our sponsors too- the money/materials you donated helped tremendously and we would not have been able to create such a good house without you!

In the end I am not sure who had more fun- the people walking through the house or those of us who were scaring them.  We are already planning next year's house and it promises to be even better than this year. We are even trying to figure out a little kid loop of not so scary stuff so they can enjoy it too. I will admit I was very surprised at the number of small children who went through the house and didn't seem to be forever scared by it. But then I wasn't the one putting them to bed later either.

So THANK YOU to everyone who helped us create this event!

A Nightmare on Main Street

This fall the CAC/CCT decided to do things a bit differently- no play.  With the help of some dedicated volunteers ( a HUGE  shout out to James Hubers) we are transforming our building into a 14 room haunted house. We are getting close to having all the rooms planned out and several of them are finished. I don't want to give anything away but we have some pretty cool special effects and totally unexpected scenes in the works.

I had no idea how into Halloween James is. Maybe I should be a bit worried? He has come up with some pretty "interesting" ideas for the haunted house. I must admit I am having waaay to much fun with the black lights!

The response we have had from the business community has been amazing.

A Nightmare on Main Street

Things are coming together very well for our first ever attempt at a haunted house. We have been kicking around making a haunted house for a few years and this year I met a couple of amazing people who were a huge help during Harry Potter this summer. So now I am cob-web deep in making a haunted house.

The response from the community has been wonderful. We have collected over $800 in sponsorships from area businesses so we could afford to purchase things we need to make this haunted house the best ever. We also have a couple of businesses who have donated materials and in-kind items for the haunted house.

So far we have 7 rooms designed, built and almost finished. My favorite thing to do is to "decorate" scenes when we do shows. So I am in my element decorating these haunted rooms. We are still looking for some more actors and safety people to be in the haunted house during its four night run. If this is successful I am pretty positive that this will become an annual event.

There's an angel among us!

This summer was busy for the CAC/CCT with Harry Potter in June and then our high school and college summer shows in the black box in July.

This summer was HOT. As in extremely warm. The air conditioner in the black box decided to quit during the worst of the summer heat in July. I was proud of our cast of "Collective Dating" for going on with the show in spite of the lack of AC. We had fans running and doors open and cold water available for the audience and actors. I think every one in the place lost about 5 pounds each night. The shows were great and the actors did a wonderful job. We warned the audience that the ACwas broken and we didn't have the $1300 to get it fixed. We had a donation jar for the AC and garnered $185- which we were extremely grateful for! But it wasn't enough to get the job done.

During the two weeks between shows we got a phone call from an anonymous person who said- call and get the AC fixed and I will have a check for you for the amount by the end of the week! The cast of "Fresh Brewed" was very appreciative of the cooler climate for rehearsals and the audience was too!

So- THANK YOU to the angel who heard about our plight and gave us the money to get the air conditoner fixed. Thank you from all of us at the Black Box Studio Theatre!

Still crazy after all these years......

Yep. Why? because after a long absence ( I would say it's been at least 18 years) I have resumed the mantle of "Director" of the Carroll Youth Theatre. This is a program that I started when I was a junior in highschool. The orginal idea behind youth theatre was that all the kids who participated would be involved in all aspects of the play. Not just acting. There is more to producing a play than memorizing lines. I will be returning the program to its roots and these kids will learn a lot.

So- this summer I will be directing a delightful play written by Jeannette Jaquish called (drum roll please)

Harry Potter and the Obnoxious Voice

It is a parody based on the works by JK Rowling. I have a copy of the script and I have read it and it is brilliant! I am a huge Harry potter fan....

Harry is once again locked in his room where Dobby & an inebriated Winky come to him with a warning to save not his life but at least his career. At Hogwarts things are weirder than ever, Snape is furious at Ron's spilled potion, Hagrid doesn't think Harry''s "hearing voices" thing is funny, Dumbledore has lost his meal ticket, Malfoy has a fancy-schmancy new "mission", time is twisting, the house elves battle Peeves and whisper about "The Master".

All the details about auditions will be found in the Rec Center's Summer Program booklet which will come out in late March.

Murder at Mardi Gras

February 24th and 25th the Community Theatre will be presenting an audience interactive murder mystery at the Santa Maria Winery. We are still looking for two men and one woman to be in the show. If you are interested or need more information please contact me.

blackbox@carrollarts.org

The Scene: The Grand Ballroom of the DuPre Chateau on the evening of the Krewe of Midas Masquerade Ball
There is a mystery afoot in the Big Easy- The Krewe of Midas King, Pierre DuPre, has been murdered, strangled with a set of Mardi Gras beads.  Pierre was always suspicious of those looking to sink their claws into his fortune. Was it the greed of those around him that put old Pierre in the grave? His beloved family members, friends and neighbors have now become suspects in this Garden District murder.

Mathew Gator” Crovitz: A boy from the Bayou who worked his way through law school; He is madly in love with Alexis DuPre. (Costume: A preppy college outfit mixed with a fisherman/outdoors man outfit. Props: a net, fishing pole and some law books.)

Alexis DuPre: Pierre’s socialite daughter; a southern belle and reigning “Magnolia Queen” at Dixie University. (Costume: a ball gown, tiara and sash)

Bourbon DuPre: A jazz musician from the French Quarter. (Costume: A tuxedo or simply slacks and a flashy vest over a button down shirt and a bowler hat trumpet or a saxophone. Or you can go all out and wear an outrageous Mardi Gras costume with gold, green and purple.)

Melissa F. DuPre:  Pierre DuPre’s new wife from Las Vegas. (Costume: A flashy outfit that is as trampy as it is tacky. A feathered boa is a must)

Connika Gothika:  An eccentric novelist and Pierre DuPre’s next door neighbor. (Costume: all dressed in black with long black wig and dark makeup and jewelry)

J. Stephen Peek: The DuPre family attorney and Pierre DuPre’s closest friend and confidant. (Costume: A simple suit and tie and a briefcase)

Cayenne Pepper: The DuPre family chef and aspiring TV star. (Costume: White coat, apron and a chef’s hat. Cooking utensils and a cookbook)

Elise St. Gresch: The young and attractive live in maid at the DuPre Chateau. (Costume: French maid or a little black dress with a white apron and a feather duster)
